Louisville's WLKY adding Me-TV beginning Thursday

If you're an over-the-air television viewer in the easternmost portion of the Tri-State -- or if you happened upon this site in the Louisville area -- you'll want to rescan your TV sets on Thursday.
That's the day when Louisville's CBS affiliate, WLKY 32, will debut its new Me-TV channel on 32.2.
If Me-TV is familiar, it should be:  Local 7 WTVW is also now a Me-TV affiliate, but where WTVW carries only a portion of the Me-TV schedule, WLKY 32.2 will have the whole deal, from "I Love Lucy" to "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," just to name a couple.
Classic TV fans in the Louisville market should be well pleased by WLKY's move, because it gives them more choice in what's become a competitive market for classic TV.  Louisville is also home to an RTV affiliate (WBNA 21.4) and Antenna TV (WDRB 41.2).
EDITOR'S NOTE:  Louisville-area Insight customers will also receive WLKY 32.2 on cable channel 188.

"RightThisMinute" coming to 14Xtra beginning Sept. 12

With "Dr. Phil" moving to CBS44 and "Oprah" going away, some have wondered what 14WFIE would air on its 14Xtra subchannel during primetime on weeknights.
You can wonder no more:  The station's director of programming and research, Kirk Williams, tells me this afternoon that "Dr. Oz" will move from his 8 a.m. timeslot to 7 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by "RightThisMinute," a new syndicated news program that integrates the internet, mobile and social media, citizen journalists and a fresh new way of telling stories.
The show is a joint venture between Cox Media Group, 14WFIE owner Raycom Media, Courier & Press parent company The E.W. Scripps Co., and MagicDust Television.
So what can we expect from "RightThisMinute?"  According to the show's announcement press release, "RightThisMinute is a show designed for active viewers who want to stay informed. It is a fastpaced roundup of the most timely, engaging and explosive stories, as well as the stories that viewers determine are of most interest. The most-incredible video, the most-talked-about celebrity scandals, the stories that make people stop and think, compelling human-condition stories, and the next day’s popular "water cooler" stories will be covered in every episode."  In other words, it's sort of like a tabloid show, but with a twist.
Will it work?  We'll just have to wait and see.

MyFox10 to launch on northern Tri-State cable systems Thursday

WTHI-TV has announced this afternoon that a number of cable systems in the northern part of the Tri-State will begin carrying the new MyFox10 when it debuts on Thursday.
Those companies and communities in our area which will have MyFox10 as of that date are:  Cinergy Metronet (Vincennes), Comcast (Olney), Daviess-Martin RTC Television (Daviess and Martin counties), NewWave Communications (communities along U.S. 50), Suddenlink (Elnora, Odon and Plainville) and Wabash Independent Networks (Clay, Richland, Lawrence and Wayne counties plus Flora, Xenia and Noble).
Customers of those cable providers will need to contact the companies directly to determine which channel will be used for the station.
Still to be determined are launch dates for Mediacom, DirecTV and Dish Network.  In the case of Mediacom, LIN Media, which owns WTHI, is in the midst of retransmission consent negotiations with the cable company.  With Dish, it's possible that it may not be on in the short term, as Dish has thus far refused to carry Indiana's two other new Fox affiliates, Fox44 WEVV in Evansville and WISE-DT2 in Fort Wayne, calling the terms of carriage "outrageous," despite the fact that other companies have had no qualms about picking up the stations.

Syndicated program changes coming to local stations

We're getting closer to the beginning of the new fall season, and while the excitement usually surrounds the network shows, local TV stations have quite a few changes coming in the syndicated ranks as well.  Our good friend TeacherJake has done some deep background work to get us the information on these shows, so here's what's coming and on which station.
This will be updated as more information becomes available.
Local 7 WTVW
  • "3rd Rock From the Sun" comes back to the lineup starting next Monday, Sept. 5.  The show will air weeknights at 11:30 p.m., replacing "Scrubs."
  • Starting Sept. 12, you'll see two hours (!) of "Judge Judy" each weekday.  In addition to the existing 5-6 p.m. hour, the station is also adding an hour between 3-4 p.m.
  • Also joining the lineup:  "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "The Big Bang Theory."
14WFIE & 14Xtra
  • "America Now" joins the daytime lineup for a full hour on 14WFIE beginning July 12 at 3 p.m., followed by the station's new 4 p.m. newscast.
  • Over on 14Xtra, as I told you earlier today, the subchannel's primetime lineup adds "Dr. Oz" repeats (which move from 8 a.m.) at 7 p.m. and the groundbreaking news program "RightThisMinute" at 8 p.m.  These replace "Dr. Phil" and "Oprah" reruns which now air.
WAZE-CW19
  • "That '70s Show" is back, finding a home at midnight starting Sept. 6.
  • "'Til Death" joins the weekday afternoon lineup starting Monday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
  • "Seinfeld," which is the Methuselah of Tri-State syndicated shows, moves to afternoons at 4:30 p.m. beginning on the 12th as well.
WEHT-NEWS 25
  • No noteworthy changes.
CBS44 WEVV
  • As previously announced, "Dr. Phil" will make his move from 14WFIE to CBS44 on Sept. 12.  The timeslot is the same, 3 p.m.
  • Phil's arrival means "Ellen" will move to 4 p.m.
Fox44 WEVV
  • Anderson Cooper's new daytime talker, "Anderson," debuts on Sept. 12 and will hold the 1 p.m. timeslot, which is later than originally announced.

BRIEF: NewWave to be back in Albion for more maintenance Tuesday morning

NewWave Communications customers in part of Southeastern Illinois may experience sporadic service disruptions beginning at midnight tonight, as the cable company is once again planning maintenance in Albion.
The process is expected to last from midnight until 5 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Local 7 WTVW to air final Colts preseason game Thursday

Local 7 WTVW has announced this evening that it will air the final Indianapolis Colts preseason game of the year this Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. Central time (7 p.m. Eastern).
Originally, NEWS 25 had planned to air three of the team's four exhibition games, but technical difficulties prevented them from airing all but the first one.  Now, thankfully, the folks at Channel 7 have stepped in to ensure that Colts fans don't miss the last big game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which will be played at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.
Local 7 News at 6 and 6:30 will not be seen that evening because of the telecast, but the 9 p.m. news is expected to air at its usual time.

Can't make it to a football game tonight? Your selection of broadcast games is vast

If you're a fan of high school football, then you're going to be happy tonight, even if you can't make it out to a game.  Radio and TV stations across the Tri-State are bringing you lots of exciting action this evening, and in the sidebar on the right side of the page, you'll find a list of who's playing and on which station.
Some games will also be streamed live online, and you will find links to those as well.
I realize the list likely isn't complete, so, if you know of any I've missed, please feel free to email me at jnewkirk77@att.net or tweet me (I'm JakesDTVBlog on Twitter) so I can be sure to add it.

Proposed WEOA translator gets OK for move from Ft. Branch to Darmstadt

Twin Falls, Idaho-based Edgewater Broadcasting, which entered into an agreement in May to sell its Ft. Branch translator station (W254BO-98.7 FM) to Evansville's BLS Entertainment, has been granted FCC approval to proceed with moving the station's city of license to Darmstadt, along with a move one tick down the dial to 98.5 FM.
The newly-rechristened W253BF will simulcast the programming of BLS' WEOA-1400 The Pump, which, in addition to its urban programming lineup, also serves as the flagship station of the Evansville IceMen and an affiliate of the Indiana University sports radio network.
No word on when the move will be completed, but it is believed to be soon.

Local 7 names new weekend co-anchor and "My Hometown" host, adds two reporters to staff

Local 7 WTVW reporter Lindsay Merwin has been chosen as the station's new weekend news co-anchor (alongside Shalah Sasse and weather forecaster Drew Gardner) and host of the station's upcoming new program "My Hometown." "The show will be all about history, hot spots and people that make the communities in the Local 7 viewing area special," explains Bob Walters, Local 7's news director.  "During the week Lindsay will work on 'My Hometown' visiting Tri-state communities to tell unique and interesting stories."   The show will air on weekends starting in late September.
Merwin joined WTVW in September 2010, following her graduation from DePauw University.  A 2006 Central High School graduate, Merwin also interned at the station and was a camera operator for "A.M. Evansville."
MOODY, DOZIER JOIN REPORTING STAFF
In the past few weeks, you've likely noticed two new friendly faces reporting the news at Local 7. "Kayla Moody is an Indiana native and a recent Ball State University graduate, and Tabnie Dozier is a Western Kentucky University graduate with several family members living in Evansville," Walters told me this afternoon. Dozier was an anchor and reporter at Western's Newschannel 12, and interned with the University's PBS member station, WKYU-PBS (Channel 24).

WTHI-TV unveils MyFox10 program lineup

It was just yesterday that Fox and WTHI-TV announced that Fox programming would stay on in the Wabash Valley (and the northernmost part of the Tri-State as well), but with less than a week before MyFox10 goes on the air, developments are moving fast.
This afternoon, the station took the wraps off of the MyFox10 program lineup, and while not all of the shows on the schedule have been determined, there are some highlights:
  • Classic TV fans will want to watch for "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie," which will kick off morning programming Monday through Friday at 8 and 8:30 a.m. ET (7/7:30 a.m. CT), respectively.  On Saturday nights, you'll find "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Beverly Hillbillies" at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET (9/9:30 p.m. CT).
  • News will be a part of the schedule as well, with "News 10 on Fox" every weeknight at 10 p.m. ET (9 p.m. CT).
  • Additionally, you'll find court shows, talk shows, entertainment programs like "TMZ" and "Access Hollywood" and many more.  Click here to see the entire lineup.
Cable and satellite carriage is expected to be announced next week.  Over-the-air viewers will be able to find MyFox10 on Channel 10.2, replacing TheCoolTV, which will no longer be carried by the station after Wednesday.

It's been a busy week here at JDTVB.  From the return of ABC and the "rescue" of Fox in the Terre Haute market (which will affect those of you reading this in the northern part of the Tri-State) to a radio station's big format change, to mourning the passing of late-night TV's favorite uncle, we've covered it all.
Without further ado, kick back, relax, read all the latest info, and we'll see you again on Monday ... or sooner if news breaks!  Have a great weekend!

PROGRAM NOTE: 14WFIE to air "Muppets from Space" tonight, preempting network reruns

UPDATE, 7:40 p.m.:  By now, you've probably noticed that "Muppets from Space" is not on 14.  "Last Action Hero" is on instead ... and yes, it did already air once this summer. 14WFIE has announced this morning that tonight's regularly-scheduled repeat episodes of "Community," "Parks and Recreation," "The Office" and "30 Rock" will not air.
In those shows' place, the station plans to broadcast the 1999 film, "Muppets from Space," beginning at 7:00 PM CT.

WTHI-TV picks up Fox affiliation in Terre Haute: "MyFox10" to debut Sept. 1

UPDATE, 5:30 p.m.:  Details are continuing to emerge on MyFox10.  It will broadcast on channel 10.2 over the air, there will be a 10:00 p.m. newscast, and will be carried on cable and satellite in the Wabash Valley.  More details on channels will be announced soon.  To keep up with the latest, you can check out the station's Facebook page and website. Television viewers in the Terre Haute market (and those in the northern part of the Tri-State who do not receive Fox44 WEVV) will not have to do without Fox programming after all, as the network has announced this morning that it has entered into a new affiliation agreement with LIN Media-owned CBS affiliate WTHI-TV 10.
“We are pleased to offer Fox’s premium lineup of programs on our digital channel in Terre Haute,” said LIN President-CEO Vincent L. Sadusky. “Together with WTHI-TV, we aim to strengthen our leading position in the market.”
The new MyFox10 will air on one of WTHI-TV's digital subchannels beginning Sept. 1, replacing Mission Broadcasting's soon-to-be-former WFXW-Fox 38 as the area's Fox affiliate. Nexstar Broadcasting, which operates WFXW under a shared services agreement, announced earlier this summer that it would switch that station's affiliation to ABC and rebrand it as WAWV. WTHI, which has been a primary CBS affiliate since it first signed on in July 1954, will continue to air CBS programming on channel 10.1.  It has not been announced which of the station's subchannels will be used for Fox, although a safe bet would be channel 10.2, which is currently used for TheCoolTV.
MyFox10 will be LIN's seventh Fox affiliate; the company also has Fox stations in Portsmouth-Norfolk, Va.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Providence, R.I.–New Bedford, Mass.; Mobile, Ala.-Pensacola, Fla.; Green Bay-Appleton, Wis.; and Toledo, Ohio.
“LIN is one of FOX’s strongest affiliate groups, and we are thrilled to expand our already successful partnership,” said Jon Hookstratten, Fox EVP, network distribution.  “In an ever-changing television marketplace, it’s key that Fox continues to grow our relationships with progressive media companies like LIN.  With their track record, we are confident this partnership in Terre Haute will be a big success.” WTHI's addition of Fox means that, for the first time, all four major network affiliations will be broadcast in the market, eliminating the need for area cable and satellite systems to import a distant station, as has been the case for ABC since 1995, when the station then known as WBAK dropped ABC for Fox.  Since that time, cable subscribers in communities throughout the market have received either WEHT-NEWS 25 from Evansville, WICD-NewsChannel 15 from Champaign, Ill., or WRTV-6 from Indianapolis for ABC programming.  With WAWV's arrival and WTHI's move today, it would appear that importation will likely cease soon in many of those communities.
█ WTHI-TV is available on cable systems in the northern portion of the Tri-State, including Lawrenceville, Olney and Flora, Ill.; Vincennes and Washington, Ind., and surrounding communities.  Cable carriage of the new channel is not yet known, but I will publish that information as soon as I have it.

Fairfield's WFIW-FM begins live streaming

Fairfield, Ill. radio station WFIW-FM 104.9 has begun live streaming its broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The station, which is owned by Wayne County Broadcasting, broadcasts adult hits and the locally-originated "Morning Show with Woody & Murvis," as well as news.  Other programs of interest include "RFD Illinois," "Gospel Time with Dave Rigg," and "The Methodist Hour."
You can listen by visiting WFIW's website or by clicking here.

Local 7 to debut new weather system on Sept. 1

UPDATE, 3:05 p.m.:  A promo for the new weather system is scheduled to begin running tonight.  Watch for it! The weather is changing at Local 7 WTVW.
Drew Gardner, the station's weekend forecaster, tweeted earlier this afternoon that they are training on a new weather system, which is set to make its debut on Sept. 1.
No word yet on what the new system is like or where it's from, but my prediction is that it will be a vast improvement over the AccuWeather system now in use at the station, which is not as advanced as those at 14WFIE and NEWS 25.
I'll bring you more details as soon as I have 'em!

Cromwell Group to flip WLME from country to sports talk: "102.7 The Game" premieres Monday

14WFIE reports this afternoon that the Cromwell Group, which owns and operates seven radio stations in the Owensboro area, will flip one of its three country stations, WLME-102.7 FM, to sports talk beginning Monday.
The new "102.7 The Game" will feature mostly ESPN Radio programming, including “Mike and Mike in the Morning” from 5 to 9 a.m., along with Western Kentucky University sports broadcasts and other programs.
“Preparations are underway to make this format change on Monday, August 29,” said Cromwell station owner Bayard “Bud” Walters. “We are very excited to finally bring a full-time sports station to Kentuckiana.”
There are relatively few all-sports radio stations in the Tri-State area; none of those currently on the air reach Owensboro with a clear signal, so the debut of 102.7 The Game is a first for Kentucky's fourth-largest city.
“Besides a studio renovation, we are negotiating contracts with local talent and contacting advertisers,” explained Lee Wilson, general manager of Cromwell Group's local stations. “In addition to our contract with Western Kentucky University for football and basketball play-by-play, we are currently exploring other live, local, regional and national sports programming to bring to 'The Game.'”
In addition to 102.7 The Game, Cromwell owns and operates WBIO-94.7 FM, WXCM-97.1 FM ("97X"), WTCJ-105.7 FM ("Classic Hits CJ105.7"), WTCJ-1230 AM, WVJS-1420 AM and 100.5 FM, and WKCM-1160 AM.

Mediacom customers in Clay Co., Ill. may lose CBS programming next week

Some Tri-State cable subscribers may lose their source of CBS programming next week if a dispute over retransmission consent fees cannot be worked out.
Mediacom customers in Clay City, Louisville and Iola, Ill. (as well as in Mediacom's other Wabash Valley service territories) are being warned by Terre Haute's WTHI-TV 10 that if a new carriage agreement is not reached by next Wednesday at 4 p.m. Central time, the cable company will have to cease carrying the station, as well as others owned by LIN Media in other parts of the country served by Mediacom.
"We believe it is our duty to inform our viewers when a contract deadline approaches and a new agreement has not yet been reached," says a statement on WTHI's website.  The station is encouraging customers to call a toll-free number to tell Mediacom that they want to keep WTHI in their lineup.  Additionally, customers can email WTHI at KeepWTHIonmediacom@wthitv.com.
If the station is pulled, Clay City customers will have no other CBS programming source.  However, those living in Louisville and Iola have two other CBS affiliates to choose from:  KMOV-4 (St. Louis) and WCIA-3 (Champaign).
According to WTHI's website, negotiations are ongoing between the two sides.
