World Series was least-watched since '87

Giants sweep drew an average of 12.7M viewers
The numbers have been crunched, and it's not good:  This year's World Series on Fox, in which the San Francisco Giants crushed the Detroit Tigers in four games, was the least-watched Series in 25 years.
A mere 12.7 million people, on average, watched this year's Fall Classic, the fewest since Nielsen began keeping track with People Meters in 1987.
The final game of the series - Game 4 - drew 15.5 million viewers, comparing poorly to the final game of last year's Series, which was won by the St. Louis Cardinals and seen by 25.4 million.
On the plus side, despite the poor viewership, the Series did put Fox on top last week, beating out CBS.

Sinclair releases third quarter results

Revenue up 49% from same period last year
Sinclair Broadcast Group reported Thursday that net broadcast revenues from continuing operations were $226.4 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, an increase of 49% versus the prior year period result of $151.9 million. The company had operating income of $78.6 million in the quarter, as compared to $52.4 million in the prior year period. Net income was $26.2 million, versus $19.2 million a year ago. Political revenues were $27.8 million in the third quarter, versus $2.4 million in the third quarter of last year. "We are very pleased with our results for the third quarter, which were driven by increased advertising spending by the political and automotive categories, as well as higher retransmission revenues," said David Smith, Sinclair's president and CEO. "Despite increased demand for air-time by politicians and political action groups, the core business showed solid growth. On a same station basis, excluding political, net broadcast revenues grew 6.9% in the third quarter." Smith continued, "In an extraordinary, value-creation action and in anticipation of a potential increase in dividend tax rates in 2013, the board of directors decided to return approximately $81.2 million of value to our shareholders in the form of a $1 per share special cash dividend, in addition to our regular $0.15 per share quarterly dividend."
Sinclair owns and/or operates the following stations in this part of the country:
  • WDKA-My49, Paducah, Ky. (Operated for WDKA Acquisition Corp.)
  • KBSI-Fox 23, Cape Girardeau, Mo.
  • KDNL-ABC30, St. Louis, Mo.
  • WZTV-Fox 17, Nashville, Tenn.
  • WUXP-My30, Nashville, Tenn.
  • WNAB-CW58, Nashville, Tenn. (Operated for Tennessee Broadcasting)

America Now showing huge ratings gains for Raycom

Louisville ratings for show up 74% compared to last year
I've never been completely sold on "syndicating from within," as companies like Raycom have done with America Now and others, especially when there are so many good syndicated programs out there (including one that hasn't managed to make its way into the Evansville market despite being perhaps the one that was most-talked-about this year ... hmmm ...).
But in numbers newly released, it's clear that America Now is working - and drawing more eyes to the stations where it's broadcast.
Hosted by Bill Rancic and Leeza Gibbons, the joint venture between Raycom and ITV Studios America, which is now in its third season, has improved its position in 14 metered TV markets - including Louisville - by an average of 20% over last year.  It's bringing in some 137,000 viewers a day (good for a 1.2 rating and 3 share versus a 1.0/3 last year) in just those 14 out of the 45 markets where the show can be seen.
In fact, Louisville's ratings for the show have shown the most improvement of all.  On WAVE 3, where the show is on at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET each weekday, it's grown its audience by a whopping 74% compared to last year.
It's not publicly known how the show is doing in Evansville at WFIE or in Cape at KFVS, but both have positioned the show with popular programs both before, during and after, which certainly put it before a solid viewer base.  At 14, the show bookends Jeopardy and leads into Dr. Oz, while at KFVS, it airs between Let's Make a Deal and Dr. Oz.
AREA STATIONS WHERE AMERICA NOW CAN BE SEEN
  • WFIE-14.1 (EVANSVILLE)
    • Weekdays @ 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. CT
  • KFVS-12.1 (CAPE GIRARDEAU)
    • Weekdays @ 3 and 3:30 p.m. CT
  • KFVS-12.2 / WQWQ-9 / WQTV-24 (CAPE GIRARDEAU / PADUCAH / MURRAY)
    • Weekday nights @ 11:35 p.m. and midnight CT
  • WAVE 3 (LOUISVILLE)
    • Weekdays @ 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. CT (11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET)

BRIEF: Time for a paint job at 'KTG

Station to reduce power until paint work on its tower is done
From our friends at Power Rock 93.9 KTG (WKTG-93.9 FM, Madisonville) comes word that the station will be reducing its power today as a crew climbs its tower to give it a new coat of paint:
In just a bit we may be going to shorten our broadcast range for a short period while we have some brave men climb our huge tower and paint the thing! Some of our fans out in the fringe areas may lose us for a short time but as soon as those dudes get off the big stick, we'll be back rocking at full volume!
Stay tuned ...

WAZE's owners sell Mississippi CW station to TBN

Steve and Mike Roberts have sold one of their bankrupt stations
Local CW affiliate still up for sale, STL newspaper reports
UPDATE, 12:45 p.m.:  According to today's roundup of station sales at TVNewsCheck, TBN is paying $1.5 million for WRBJ. Of course, WRBJ has been fully built-out and is a digital operation, unlike WAZE, which is analog-only and consists - for legal purposes, anyway - of three low-power stations (channels 4, 5 and 17). PREVIOUSLY: It's been months since we've heard anything from Roberts Broadcasting, the bankrupt St. Louis-based owner of WAZE-LP, Evansville's CW affiliate, but that changed Tuesday morning with a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the company is selling its Jackson, Miss. station, WRBJ-TV, to California-based Trinity Christian Center, which is better known as Trinity Broadcasting Network or TBN.
WRBJ, the newspaper reports, will drop CW programming in favor of TBN's Christian fare, although it's not immediately apparent when that will happen.  It's also not known how much TBN is paying for the station.
What remains of WAZE is still on the market
Like its sister stations in St. Louis, Evansville and Columbia, S.C., WRBJ has been a big money loser for Roberts Broadcasting; when it filed bankruptcy around this time last year, the owners listed that the station had $1.23 million in debts and a mere $174,000 in assets.  It's been reported that WRBJ has lost as much as $30,000 a month for the past several months.
Media Venture Partners, a San Francisco-based firm specializing in media transactions, handled WRBJ's sale and is also in charge of trying to sell WAZE and Roberts' Columbia station, WZRB.  No word yet on if any deals are in the offing for those.

OMG! The Insider is changing!

CBS Television Distribution teams up with Yahoo! to enhance, rename popular syndie news show
CBS Television Distribution (CTD) and Yahoo! announced on Tuesday that they've reached a deal combining the broadcasting power of The Insider with the online reach of Yahoo!. As part of the deal, entertainment newsmagazine The Insider will be renamed omg! Insider in January.   Kevin Frazier and Brooke Anderson will continue to host the TV show, as well as draw on Yahoo! talent such as Kristen Aldridge (omg! NOW) and Michael Yo (The Yo Show on Yahoo!). In addition, Yahoo!'s popular omg! entertainment news site, visited by nearly 30 million users each month, will be the exclusive home to video provided by the TV show.  omg! Insider will be a true web and on-air collaboration that aims to reinvent how consumers access entertainment news across screens. Online, Yahoo!'s omg! will provide continually updated coverage, including video clips, celebrity interviews, photo galleries, engaging editorial and a number of interactive social features. On air each evening, the TV show will offer a unique mix of informal in-studio conversations with celebrities and personality-driven discussions around the day's hottest topics and trends. The new venture also will provide a substantial promotional platform for TV station partners – the web site will post breaking news throughout the day and continually promote the television broadcast later that night. "We're excited to give our affiliate stations the opportunity to be associated with one of the largest entertainment news sites in the business," said Joe DiSalvo, President of Sales for CTD. "We're adding value to The Insider by tapping into an online audience in the millions and taking advantage of Yahoo!'s omg! brand and its loyal following. Our stations will also get an unparalleled promotional opportunity online. This is the perfect example of what the convergence of broadcast and digital is all about." "We're thrilled to bring together two of today's most popular entertainment news brands to create an ‘always-on' content experience across TV, the Web and beyond," said Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!. "Yahoo! is focused on bringing the most personalized and relevant information to our users. Original video content and branded multi-screen programming help us to deliver on that promise. We're proud to collaborate with CBS Television Distribution to bring omg! Insider to millions of viewers in such a unique and exciting way." A spinoff of Entertainment Tonight, The Insider is now in its 9th season. EDITOR'S NOTE: The Insider can currently be seen on the following channels around the region (check each station's schedule for airtimes): WTVW (Evansville), WTWO (Terre Haute), WBKI (Louisville), WPSD (Paducah), KPLR (St. Louis), WNKY-CBS (Bowling Green) and WZTV (Nashville).

Indiana Broadcasters Association names Spectrum Awards finalists

SW Ind. radio well-represented; Evansville TV stations shut out again
The Indiana Broadcasters Association will dole out its 2012 Spectrum Awards on Nov. 10 in Indianapolis, and several Southwestern Indiana radio stations are among this year's finalists.  However, in what's becoming something of a sorry trend, Evansville's TV stations were once again not represented.
Among the radio stations on the list are stations from Evansville, Huntingburg, Jasper and VincennesWVUB-91.1 FM and WIKY-104.1 FM received the most nominations, with Blazer 91.1 getting six nominations and WIKY five.
On the TV side, Terre Haute TV station WTWO-NBC 2 received seven nominations, and WTHI-TV has eight.

CBS gives full-season orders to Vegas and Elementary

Shows are #1 and #2 among new network programs for the season
CBS announced Tuesday afternoon that it's ordered "back nine" episodes (which will make full season orders) to television's top two freshman series — Vegas and Elementary.
“Vegas and Elementary have opened strong, delivering big audiences and winning performances in important time periods,” said Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment's president.  “Each of the shows hasrich characters, big stars and a unique visual style that have stood out in the crowd, helping make two of our strongest nights even stronger.”
Vegas, which stars Randy Quaid and Michael Chiklis, is the #1 new series of the season and ranked sixth overall.  It's a winner in its Tuesday time period in viewers and key demographics and has improved the year-ago time period by 8 percent in viewers.
Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, Aidan Quinn and Jon Michael Hill, is the #2 new series of the season, ranked ninth overall. Like Vegas, it wins its Thursday slot in the key ratings measures, up 17% in adults 18-49 and 10% in adults 25-54.

93.5 The Wolf midday host named PA announcer for Purple Aces men's basketball

Tommy Mason
Tommy Mason takes over for John MacCauley, longtime announcer who died suddenly in August
UPDATE, 10:17 a.m.:  See below. The University of Evansville athletics department announced Wednesday evening that Tommy Mason will assume public address duties for Purple Aces men’s basketball this season. Mason, who is the midday host on Evansville country station 93.5 The Wolf (WLFW) and PA announcer for the Evansville IceMen, takes over for the late John MacCauley, who died unexpectedly in August.  MacCauley had been the Aces' announcer for 27 years. "It is an honor for me to be able to assume this position,” Mason said.  “There is a reason John was doing this for 27 years and I want to do my best to continue the legacy that he has started.”
Mason is no stranger to UE athletics; he's handled PA duties for other sports since 2006 and has been the men's basketball team's on-court announcer for the past five years. "Tommy has a strong interest in the success of the Aces teams and the individual student-athletes," said UE athletic director John Stanley. "This is an important role that had been ably handled by John MacCauley for years and we believe that Tommy will work very hard to continue making the experience at the Aces games enjoyable."
Congratulations, Tommy!

Ky. radio station owner elected to BMI board of directors

BMI, a leading music rights management company, has elected a Kentucky radio station owner to its board of directors.
Steve Newberry, president and CEO of Glasgow, Ky.-based Commonwealth Broadcasting Corp., was elected during BMI's annual shareholder meeting in Nashville earlier this week.
Commonwealth owns 22 radio stations across Kentucky, including three in the Tri-State - adult contemporary WTTL-106.9 FM (Madisonville), country WWKY-97.7 FM (Providence) and sports talk WTTL-1310 AM (Madisonville).
Newberry is an active broadcaster, having served in high positions with the National Association of Broadcasters, the Kentucky Broadcasters Association and the Kentucky Authority for Educational Television, among his many affiliations.  Last year, he received the National Radio Award, the industry’s highest leadership honor.
Founded by broadcasters in 1939 as a competitive force in the licensing of music, BMI is widely credited with shepherding the creation and explosion of American forms of music including Jazz, R&B, Country and Rock and Roll.  BMI is headquartered in the World Trade Center complex in New York City.

NBC cans Animal Practice

Sorry, monkey, you're out: Whitney is taking over at 7 CT Wed. nights
Whitney returns to take over the time slot on Nov. 14
UPDATE, 2:30 a.m. FRIDAY: I goofed, folks. Animal Practice is actually the third show of the season to be canceled.  Last Friday, while my wife and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary, NBC pulled the plug on a show it hadn't even brought to air!  Perhaps we can take this as a good sign that NBC is finally figuring out which shows are going to bomb before they ruin our TV viewing.  It's about damn time. PREVIOUSLY: NBC announced this afternoon that it's canceled the low-rated sitcom Animal Practice, although the network has decided to burn off a couple more episodes.
Starting Nov. 14, Whitney - a fairly popular show that NBC had delayed just last week - will return and take over the 7 p.m. CT Wednesday slot.
Interestingly, Animal Practice is only the second show of the season to be canceled so far.  CBS was first to kill one of its progeny when it sent Made in Jersey packing last week.

Cubs TV analyst Brenly says he won't be back for '13 season

Bob Brenly
Brenly expected to return to Arizona and take over broadcasting duties for the Diamondbacks
Chicago Cubs TV analyst Bob Brenly made it official Wednesday: He's decided not to return to the team’s broadcast booth in 2013, and plans to look for another baseball broadcasting job.
It might be a short job search.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Brenly, the former Arizona Diamondbacks manager who has been in the Cubs' booth since replacing Steve Stone in 2005, is widely expected to return to Arizona and take over for Mark Grace, whom the D-backs placed on leave after a DUI arrest this summer. "Working here in Chicago was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my professional career," Brenly said in a statement. "I was very blessed to have the best play-by-play man in the game as my partner for eight years and Cubs’ fans are very fortunate to have Len Kasper as the voice of the Cubs. I’ll miss working with him and we look fondly toward returning to Chicago in the future." "We wish Bob well in his next broadcasting position and thank him for his years of outstanding work on Cubs games on WGN-TV," said Steve Farber, WGN's acting GM and VP of programming for Tribune Broadcasting. No word yet on who will replace Brenly in Chicago's booth.

TERRE HAUTE: News 10 going HD on Monday

After 58 years, TV station getting ready to move to its new home
We've known for a while that WTHI-TV would soon be vacating its longtime home at 918 Ohio St. in downtown Terre Haute, and it looks like this week is the last before the station moves a block west to its beautiful new home at 8th and Ohio.
And, with the move will come a transition to news in high definition, according to the station's Facebook page.
Last week, someone at WTHI posted a preview photo of the station's new news set on Facebook, but that photo was quickly removed.  Based on what I saw before its removal, though, it appears the station hasn't gone too far "out there" with its new look, but instead chose a functional and modern layout that should be pleasing to the eye.
I guess viewers will find out for sure on Monday!
