WKPB-89.5 off air following "major failure" at transmitter site

Station expected to be back on the air by Tuesday afternoon

UPDATE, 4:45 p.m. TUESDAY: Here's the very latest: "We're glad to report that WKPB-FM is now back on the air following the replacement of electronic components that failed on Sunday. There may be some intermittent signal interference for a day or two while everything is fine-tuned. The onset of windy, icy weather is delaying progress this afternon.  Thanks for your patience, and thanks to our engineers for staying on top of this!"

UPDATE, 1:05 p.m. TUESDAY: From WKU Public radio comes this word: "Our WKPB site engineer has the necessary components to fix the transmitter and is on his way there. We hope to have 89.5 FM back on the air later this afternoon. Thank you for your patience!"

Regular listeners of public radio in Evansville, Henderson and Owensboro (as well as surrounding communities) have likely noticed that WKU Public Radio's local transmitting station, WKPB-89.5 FM, is off the air.

WKU reports that the outage is due to a "major failure" that occurred sometime Sunday at the WKPB transmitter site near Reed in eastern Henderson County, Ky.  Efforts were made to repair the damaged parts, but by Monday afternoon it was determined that the components which caused the failure could not be repaired.

Replacement parts are scheduled to be on site Tuesday morning, and at this time it's expected that WKPB will be back on the air sometime Tuesday afternoon.

In the meantime, listeners can use WKU Public Radio's live stream, which can be found at wkyufm.org.
